Self-portrait, unknown date

Janet Fish is a contemporary realist painter. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1938. An artistic family contributed to Fish’s early interest in art: her grandfather was an American Impressionist; her mother and uncle were sculptors; and her

father occasionally taught Art History. Janet’s paintings reflect strong vibrant still life images with bold colors and busy patterns. A still life is a picture of objects grouped together.

Her art is considered to be Photorealism (art is done with a lot of detail to make it look exactly like a photograph). Realism artists tried to show the real world exactly as it appears. They painted everyday subjects and people. They didn‘t try to interpret the setting or add emotional meaning to the scenes.
