Hundertwasser &
Elements of Art

This painting shows many of the things he loved to paint. Look for the elements of art. What is the main shape you see? (Circles) Circles and spirals were his favorite things to paint. What complementary colors do you see? Complementary colors are found across the color wheel from each other. The complementary colors he uses in this painting are red and lots of green. What kinds of lines do you observe? Lines seem to be everywhere through the painting.

He said of all the art elements, color was most important to him. He often put complementary colors in his paintings to give them the energy you feel.

Hundertwasser was passionate about nature and believed that an artist should get inspired by the irregular patterns of nature. He saw the spiral as a symbol of the natural cycle of life and used them all over his paintings. Think of three spirals that occur in nature.
